Here is something concerning Selene's backstory, that ultimately didn't make it into Childhood's End:
Selene Wildebees in Iraq circa 2007 - 2009, playing beach volleyball with two other ladies who seem to be T. J. "Stonewall" Jackson and non other than Tona Zehm herself. (Furthermore, lirvilas said that Jack Bishop is supposed to be the photographer.)

Thinking about this a bit though, I am not sure if the canonicity of this picture (which is from an earlier phase of Childhood End's creation) is still holding up.
You see, Wildebees and Tona do meet within the story, yet they don't seem to recognize each other.
Of course, at that specific point, it would have broken the story flow and/or tone, if out of the blue there were some dialogue in the vein of: "Long time no see, how have you been?"
And in-universe, both women may have more urgent stuff in their mind right then. Or after all these years, they simply fail to recognize each other immediately...

Man, this one didn't age well art wise.

As far as "canon", I'd say it probably was, because Iraq is starting to get to be a while ago, and it's not like the Australians/other commonwealth coalition partners weren't fielding absolutely everyone* who had a chance to defeat the 'muricans in 2v2 beach volleyball.

So I'm gonna say that in Childhood's End Tona and Selene didn't recognize each other/weren't in a condition to wax nostalgic.

Canon it is, then!

(And I guess if Tona and Wildebees had re-met on more amicable terms, they would have arranged to play a rematch...)
